Why Trust the Bible?!

I know! What a crazy question! The Bible is the most studied, scrutinized and tested book of all time and it has never been proven wrong. Many people have tried and some even professed that the Bible had errors (archeological, historical, scientific, etc.) but they have all been proven wrong. Concerning Archeology, I think the eminent Israeli archeologist Dr. Nelson Glueck said it best:

"No archeological discovery has ever controverted a Biblical reference. Scores of archeological findings have been made which confirm in clear outline or in exact detail historical statements in the Bible. And, by the same token, proper evaluation of Biblical descriptions has often led to amazing discoveries."

Archeology

Over 25,000 sites have now been discovered that are written about within the pages of the Bible. Some of the archeological sites discovered were the Horite nation (Genesis 14:6) the Hittite nation (Genesis 15:20), the Edomite nation (Genesis 36:9), Hazar (Joshua 15:27), Sargon (Isaiah 20:1), Sennacherib (Isaiah 37:37), and the Pool of Bethesda (John 5:2) and there are thousands more. Archeologist William F. Albright said that the Bible is the single most accurate source document of all historical documents. When I say “the Bible” I include the Jewish scriptures, because they are part of the Bible. All other religious documents or writings, including the Book of Mormon, the Quran and Hinduism have little or no value as archeological references. Nothing compares to the accuracy of the Bible.

History

Along with the archeological sites found the Bible names over 40 different Kings from neighboring countries. Subsequently, documents or inscriptions have been found to verify the Biblical accounts. At least one of these Kings was mentioned in a Biblical prophecy before he was even born! Nearly 150 years before Cyrus was born, the prophet Isaiah foretold his birth in Isaiah 44. There have also been extra biblical sources that have proved the historicity of the Bible, including: The Antiquities of the Jews, by Flavius Josephus, book 18 chapter 3; The Annals, by Cornelius Tacitus, book 15 chapter 44; the History of the World, by Julius Africanus, and the historical writings of Thallus and Pliny the Younger. The internal history and consistency of the Bible also attests to its accuracy. The Bible had one writer – God – about 40 men inspired by God wrote (in their own style) the 66 books of the Bible over a period of a little over 1,500 years, in 3 languages. All the books have one consistent theme – God’s plan of salvation, from the beginning of time through the death burial and resurrection of Christ and beyond to the judgement of all people and God’s reign on the New Earth. What an astounding feat – what miraculous book – what an amazing God we serve.

Endurance

The Bible has been scrutinized, in part or in whole for thousands of years by secular scholars, theologians, Biblical scholars, historians, archeologists, medical doctors, doctors of biology, doctors of astronomy and many others, including me. They have studied, criticized, vindicated, looked in every nook and cranny with systematic and tenacious scrutiny and have found no errors or contradictions in the Bible. There have been many allegations of errors or contradictions, but none of them has ever withstood scrutiny. Those that would call the Bible inaccurate have had thousands of years to prove their point, but they have all failed. The Bible is accurate and trustworthy.

Manuscripts

The evidence is vast when it comes to documentation. There are over 25,000 manuscripts that attest to the accuracy of the Bible. All the copies say what the other copies say with no variation in Biblical doctrine. This is important, because it lets you look at the manuscripts down through history and shows that they are all consistent, the more consistency, the more trust you can have in them.

Eye Witness Testimony

The New Testament was written in its entirety over the first 65 years of the first century, which means that they were all written less than 35 years after Jesus’s resurrection. All the writers of the New Testament were either eye witnesses or interviewed eye witnesses and wrote about the events very soon after they happened. The Bible mentions thousands of eye witnesses to the events in the New Testament, and over 500 of them witnessed Christ after he had be resurrected from the dead. This eye witness testimony was never refuted by the authorities of that day, so we can trust it today.

Scientific Accuracy

The Bible is not a science text, but the science it mentions is completely accurate, given the limited scientific knowledge of the people reading the Bible. The follow are a few brief examples of the Bible’s scientific accuracy:

Created Kinds – creatures breed and reproduce in accordance with their created kinds (dogs make more dogs, bears make more bears, etc.) (Genesis 1). Trying to mate a dog with a bear will get nothing, because they are genetically incompatible.

The Earth sits in space held in place through gravitational forces – Job 26:7

Importance of blood in life processes – Leviticus 17:11

Law of Entropy – Psalm 102:25-27

Atmospheric circulation – Ecclesiastes 1:6

Hydrologic Cycle (water cycle) – Ecclesiastes 1:7

Spherical Earth – Isaiah 40:22

And there are many other examples.

Prophecies

The prophecies within the Bible are the most compelling reason to believe and trust the Bible. There are over 2,000 prophesies within the Bible, some of which are repeated prophecies by different prophets spanning hundreds of years. Most of these prophecies have already been fulfilled, like the example of Isaiah predicting King Cyrus, by name, some 150 years before Cyrus was born. Micah prophesied about Jesus in Micah 5, foretelling the specific town he was born in. There were two Bethlehem’s in the Holy Land and Micah foretold the correct one more than 700 years before Jesus’ birth. There are at least 300 prophecies about Christ’s life, death and resurrection that have come true. There are prophecies that until recently were not unexplainable. It took the advent of new technology, recent events and political changes, and exponential population growth to explain them. For example, the only way all the people of the Earth can view the preaching of the two witnesses in Revelations is the advent of global satellite telecommunication – Satellite TV. Prophecy is unfolding before our eyes, and the Bible is accurately testifying to the prophecies written between 1,950 and 3,000 years ago.

The Bible is accurate, true and trustworthy. The Bible’s prophecies are undeniable. The Bible’s information is relevant in our daily lives. The Bible is the inspired, inerrant, infallible Word of the Almighty God.
